I guess I'm best known for my recommendation of homemade paste baits and no egg baits made using more reactive bait design approaches compared to boiled egg stifled boilies! I am also most well known for my recommending using no heating of baits; an approach which I have found is superior to boiling or steaming or slow low temperature cooking even because baits are left undamaged and the most feed-stimulatory! I want to begin by introducing a number of instant-acting water-soluble nutritionally-stimulating additives and ingredients that most anglers have easy access to! These simple but very effective substances include the following: crab paste, fish paste, shrimp paste, salmon paste, luncheon meat, spam, corned beef, sausage paste, chicken pate, liver paste, duck pate, Belachan block, liquidised sweetcorn, crushed halibut pellets and crushed hemp seed.

Old school baits still work today, I mean not just special paste baits in the style of the sixties or seventies but literally most readymade bait recipes are basically old school, still using most of the ingredients that were being used decades ago! Baits don't have to be complicated to work. Liquidised sweetcorn and luncheon meat with added salts, Marmite, peanut butter and cheap wheat flour will certainly catch fish. It's best to genuinely optimise such basic baits much further however in order to catch many more big fish that feed even more warily in the presence of baits today!

My point is really simple that you must ideally liquidise and break down your whole food ingredients and make them become far more water-soluble and detectable by fish for them to work best! Such baits physically and chemically perform better than heated baits which are just based on fine powders, because very dense heated boilies simply cannot interact with water molecules and the water column like pastes can! Some anglers actually operate out of fear and moan about their paste baits breaking down too soon! Such anglers cannot grasp the fact that baits must actually partially break down in order to be detected i.e. elements of your bait must interact with water molecules for them to even be detected!

This principle is like us humans sensing Belachan block using our sense of smell and air where the bock is solid, but mix the Belachan with hot water and suddenly this solution when tasted seriously impacts on the senses far more than smell or aroma, (You can utilise Belachan Ultra essence flavour for instance from CC Moore and it works in my tests and role as CC Moore consultant!) The principle of breaking down solids into solution, concentrate so the salts, free amino acids, esters nucleotides etc can all be released and very easily stimulate the senses inducing feeding responses! With Belachan or any substance avoid generalizing; test every source and product, because some Belachans work really well, but some are hugely less soluble and far less stimulatory so do test using mixing with cold water to test characteristics! The Belachan with the strongest taste, aroma and fastest break down in cold water is the best.

On the starter level you have a difference in impact and effect of substances, for instance whole shrimp paste is more detectable than a heated boilie containing lots of whole shrimp. Fermented shrimp paste, Belachan is far soluble, easily detected and feed-stimulatory than whole shrimp or prawn with a huge difference in what is being leaked off! The big lesson here is that if you want to make the very best bait, ensuring your bait is most easily detected and triggers feeding best, then absolutely make sure that you use soluble substances. Most especially where whole food groups, in particular proteins and others, where free amino acids and peptides, salts etc are freely released and enhancing, in literally the most water-molecule electrically-conductive ways, so fish detect them and are stimulated into the strongest feeding, instantly!

Krill meal is a well known big fish ingredient. But its effect pales into insignificance compared to hydrolysed krill protein liquid and powder. Hydrolysed krill protein beats whole krill big-time! I hope you get my point, that solubility is vital, but what actually is released from your baits is even more vital because you need to be releasing substances in levels which stimulate feeding the strongest!

Whenever you break down your whole foods, even liquidizing whole foods in the first instance, then you are doing exactly what is needed to improve your homemade baits relating to solubility and detection. Years ago when special pastes were the primary method anglers might soak and breakdown trout pellets and mix them with any of a number of soluble ingredients to form their baits, including a significant presence of milk proteins and others including liver yeasts, fish, vegetable and marine sources forming extremely soluble instant baits with no eggs or heating! The next step after using soluble materials is to further make their components even more detectable, and this is where enzyme treatment and fermentation processes designed within your baits is essential to maximizing success!
