What Martial Arts In London Entails

By Marylou Forbes

Martial arts are practiced for different reasons such as physical fitness, spiritual development, competition, self-defense, and entertainment. China and other Asian countries such as Japan and India are believed to be the origin of various forms of martial arts in London. The term martial art is coined from Latin language. It means arts of Mars. Romans believe that Mars is their god of war.

As suggested by the name, martial art is a system or set of methods. Different places around the world practice different sets of techniques. Martial art has no clear criterion of categorizing it. The techniques are classified according to a number of criteria including region, taught, and intent. In some categories, the skills taught give participants the freedom to employ weapons like swords and sticks. Others on the other hand, strictly disallow weapons and only involve defending, demonstration of skills, and striking.

Unarmed combat requires one to focus. Participants are allowed to kick and punch. Sports such as karate, sanshou, vale tudo, and wushu are a result of modified unarmed combat. Some sports like wing chun and boxing allow only punching. Some allow exclusive kicking such as savate, kickboxing, and taekwondo. Grappling is diverse and includes judo, jujutsu, glima, and sambo. It involves throwing the opponent down, pinning techniques, choking, submission holds, and joint locks.

Personal power and strength are also highly employed in unarmed combat. Some of the techniques entail using the strength of opponents against themselves. An example of such a maneuver is throwing the opponent off balance. In some, strength and speed are the main weapons used. In combat, students are taught how to keep the correct body posture and balance energy flow within the body.

Training in use of weapons in taught in weapon-based combat art. Some of the weapons used include pieces of cloth, arrows, poles, sticks, and bladed weapons. Mastery of skills in using bows and arrows is referred to as archery. Archery training involves shooting mobile or immobile targets positioned at various distances from the shooter. Fencing is among the sports that employ swords in training.

Medicinal practices like bone setting are part of certain forms of this art. Some like taekkyeon endeavor to develop the spiritual wellbeing of the trainees. Taekkyeon requires the trainees to find their inner peace so as to concentrate. The techniques taught under this system are based on breathing and relaxation. The trainees must exercise self-conscience and be composed. These two conditions play a very important role on psychological, physical, and spiritual wellbeing of the trainee.

People must be able to distinguish between exaggerations and what is real. Exaggerations like those seen in action movies are not for everyone. Youngsters tend to copy such moves only to end up in hospitals nursing fractures, wounds, serious injuries amongst others. They must be notified in advance of the results of trying out such moves at the start of movies.

There are many schools and facilities around the world which teach martial arts up to different levels. The facilities are licensed and have qualified teachers to teach trainees. Such facilities provide safe training grounds and have first aid measures and kits at hand to handle any problems that arise. Charges are fair according to the type and level of training one needs. Both genders can register and even have their training schedules personalized.
