As a tradition, people in societies have always followed certain cultures that somehow dictate their way of life; nevertheless, some have been passed by time, and it is the highest time that they are put away with. Among these cultural practices is female genital mutilation which was once considered a rite of passage for girls transitioning to womanhood. Things have changes over the years and help is needed from womens health initiatives to prevent FGM.

As much as this may have been considered normal over the past decades, the way of life has changed and as a result, the significance of these traditions has faded away. Moreover, scientific studies have shown that this practice come with various health complications that puts their lives at risk. Due to civilization, women also have lost the need to prove themselves to society by performing some of these feminine acts of cruel bravery.

The worst thing about this practice is the fact that traditions made it compulsory for all girls and therefore every girl child is forced to go through with the cut whether they are willing or not. This is the highest level of abuse and given that parent supports this practice and do not mind taking their girls through the cut, something has to be done to stop this.

Initially, the tradition was seen as a rite of passage that saw girls transition to womanhood and for that, it was seen necessary to somehow restrain them from sexual desires by cutting off their clitoris which is a means of reducing their sexual pleasure and a way seen to be the solution for controlling infidelity. Given that the clitoris is the most sensitive spot in a womans body, incising it was seen as the way to go in maintain moral order.

With the risks involved in the procedure being evident, it is obvious that the procedure must be performed by a medical expert in order to avoid these risks. This is however not the case as most of these girls are taken to traditional doctors who naively perform these procedure and therefore risk the lives of these girls who are sometimes incur lifetime damages.

Some of the damages that these girls incur are such as, infections, barrenness, lifelong severe pains which makes it difficult to give birth and sometimes even death. In addition to this, girls who undergo the cut are denied the pleasure of enjoying sex as they should which goes a long way in affecting the social lives.

In comparing the two genders, the male counterparts tend to be advantaged by this practice whereas females suffer from it due to the fact that their lives and health are risked which is an infringement of their rights. Heavy punishments should assigned people involved in organizing these acts as it no longer holds its significance but rather just threatens the lives of those that undergo it.

The society is more civilized now and people need to play their distinctive roles in ensuring that this inhuman act is eliminated and should not be used as an excuse to infringe on the rights of young innocent girls. At this day and age, people have the right not to be controlled and therefore, cutting of their body part should not be used as an excuse to maintaining moral order.
