Film & The Top 3 Mistakes Art Students Must Avoid

By Jennifer Marie Anderson

To say that film fits into different genres would be an understatement. These genres entail, but are not limited to, the likes of action, drama, and romance. Filmmakers understand what their creations should have, so that they reach as many people as possible. With that said, those who are fresh out of art school may not know all of the facts. In order to better educate these men and women on such matters, here are the top 3 mistakes not to be avoided.

As far as the film itself is concerned, casting may be overlooked. More specifically, the importance of choosing the right people for the job may be lost, which does nothing to improve the quality of any movie. As a matter of fact, it'll hurt the production process, since people in the wrong roles tend to struggle with the material they are given. For this reason, it's important to be vigilant when going about the casting process in film.

Empathy may also be lacking in certain films, which can be a problem. This is especially true if the film you're looking to create has a main character, whose events you follow to a large degree. Shouldn't the character be someone you would like to empathize with, whether it's in relation to a potential plight, their personality, or what have you? Without this particular element set in place, your effectiveness in film design will not be nearly as strong.

Finally, a film production major may make the misstep of not marketing their creation. This is a challenge for many independent filmmakers, as they are unable to make the most of services that well-known producers have. Fortunately, there are ways to get around these hurdles. Social media, for example, can appeal to millions of people, given the massive audiences many websites have. This is just one case, though it shows how marketing isn't totally out of the realm of possibility.

If there's one thing that can be said about film, it's that there are right and wrong ways to go about the creative process. With that said, if you're going to get involved in the filmmaking process, it's the latter that will be especially noteworthy. Make it a point to educate yourself, as you can attend an art school with a major in film production. Once you graduate, you can put that extensive degree of knowledge to the best of use, ensuring that only captivating films are made.
