Steps In Getting Overhead Crane Operator Certification

By Heidi Carver

If you wish to gain a certification in the operation of a crane, you first have to study several things which would involve all the technicalities of its use. The owner and even the one operating this type of lifting equipment must be aware of the safety regulations that are prescribed for this. As stated, the priority of handling this is your safety.

Each state has its own set of rule and regulations regarding this subject matter. Passing the overhead crane operator certification would mean you have to overcome the several steps of the program. This would start with the daily inspections that you have to conduct and which is required according to the regulations set by law.

When you conduct your inspection, check out the control devices whether they are coinciding with their corresponding motions and the brakes must not also have excessive drifting. One more thing you have to inspect is the stopping distances which must be kept within normal limits. The hook should also be free from any nicks, cracks or damage.

Another portion which you should inspect is the opening throat which must not be deformed together with the twist or saddle that is always prone to being worn out. The manual as supplied by the manufacturer would be very helpful in guiding you through this. Also, be informed that the hook latch has the tendency to be missing after several usage which is why you have to look for it every now and then and see if it still works.

You should also ensure that there are no kinks and wear in the wiring which may indicate a worst situation. Ensure also that there are no distortions and twists in the load chain especially on its links and it is also dangerous if the end connections have also been worn out. Stretching of the load chain must never be beyond the standards set by the manufacturer.

The reeving should also be included in the inspection and must be free as well from all twists as they tend to wound around each other. Each wire should be properly positioned in the drum grooves and the upper limit device should properly control the lifting motions. It also responsible for the load block in the hoist which would stop from hitting any part of the equipment.

You should not also miss out checking if there is an oil leakage and to do this, you may simply check the floor beneath for any signs. Moreover, you should know how to determine any sounds which are unusual such as grinding or squealing and any abnormal vibration which should be solved immediately. The warning signals should also remain legible and properly put up.

Along with the daily check up you must make, there are also periodic ones which would be more on the details and operations. You will have to carefully examine all the individual parts and determine their conditions. This is usually performed in a quarterly basis depending on the environmental factors.

You must still check the grooves of the drum since they tend to be easily worn out. The linings of the brake may also be torn over a period of use. The integrity of the electrical components should be maintained as well.
