Basics Regarding An Art Auction Fundraiser

By Paulette Mason

Art auctions are popular events among lovers of the arts and creative-minded people. So much so that an art auction fundraiser has been used on many occasions as a way to raise money. This is often done by non-profit organizations that are in need of extra funds and appeals to a range of people. That includes art donors who want the free and good publicity, as well as bidders who are anxious to get their hands on quality art at an affordable cost. These events are hosted all around the globe and can be beneficial for non-profits, artists and bidders alike.

There is some information that should be known by all parties involved to ensure these events run as smoothly as possible. The main goal is usually to raise money for whatever cause. Often times the funds go toward important causes.

Most artists want to participate in fundraisers that are involved with the arts community. These are the ones that will attract people within the visual arts community, especially the collectors of art. Involvement in such events is a good opportunity for people to get exposure in this industry.

Some may choose to donate to fundraisers that are not associated with the arts community. In any case, it is ideal for artists to work with organizations that they support and stand behind. It is not a good idea for them to be involves solely for the purpose of advancing their own agenda. There are many other potential benefits that can arise from involvement in these events.

People unfamiliar with the organization that is requesting art should do some research to find out more about them. Donate pieces that positively reflect your personal style and show your generosity and talents. That is, do not give away the scraps or old drafts that you have long discarded. Donators should also include their contact information and a short biography to go with the art.

Bidders are encouraged to look over all that is available, when possible. This is an opportunity to learn more about art and discover new artists. People should get familiar with the artist before bidding on their work and always be smart when it comes to the bidding process. Staying alert is also key, as some might have the chance to meet the artists at the events.

People who organize the events should post submission guidelines for the donors. Along with this should be information on what kind of art is expected to sell, ideal price range and more. Tell donors how the auction is going to be promoted, the expected audience and the benefits that can come of this publicity.

A log should be compiled that includes basic info on the artists and the works they have available for sale. This catalog can then be sent out to guests as soon as they purchase their admission. When they have a chance to look over the pieces and think about what they want, they are expected to feel more comfortable when it comes time to place bids. The space that is utilized for hosting these events should be well ventilated and have plenty of room for art displays.
