By Ida Dorsey

Wedding anniversaries are special and something you want to share with friends and family - especially if you and your spouse spent a whopping 25 years happily together in loving matrimony! Most happily married couples celebrate their wedding date every year with a romantic occasion. However, silver, gold and diamond anniversaries are true milestones and calls for a huge festivity. Therefore, 25th wedding anniversary invitations should be stylish, unique and reflect the love and personalities of the couple.

Despite the skyrocketing divorce rates, people have and will always treasure love and romance. The concept of celebrating a long, loving marriage originated in the times of the Holy Roman Empire. Husbands used to crown their wives with respectively a silver and a gold wreath on their 25th and 50th wedding anniversaries to show their love and affection. This romantic tradition was passed on to next generations and is still as popular as ever, albeit in a different form.

Today, there are a number of gifts made of different materials to symbolize the various wedding anniversaries. They range from the most common such as wood and tin for fifth and tenth anniversaries to the most precious such as pearl, ruby, gold and diamond for 30, 40, 50 and 60 years of marriage respectively.

Deciding how to celebrate one's 25th year of matrimony can already be daunting. One must decide how many people and specifically who to invite without offending some friends or family members. The location and nature of the event can be equally difficult. Outdoor events are mostly weather permitting and indoor events require a venue with the right ambiance and size to accommodate all guests. Should it be formal or informal?

Silver anniversary celebrations come in any shape and size, depending on the couple's personal preference. It can be an informal do for family and close friends only, or it can be a lavish gala-event for selected guests. The detailed planning in itself can be overwhelming and couples often underestimate the importance of stylish invitations being sent out timeously. It's no use planning a wonderful event, but only a few guests turn up because the invitations were sent too late.

You want to make a good impression, yet the invitation should reflect the lifestyle and personalities of the couple. It should be stylish, yet can be formal, less formal or even humoristic - depending on the way you want to celebrate the occasion!

However, a silver wedding anniversary calls for some stylish, personalized and professional invitations as it is aimed at adult, loved family members and friends. It can be formal, informal, colorful or elegant. The shape, style, paper, font and wording should reflect the senders message clearly.

The traditional appreciation for a long, happy marriage is still apparent today in the practices of some commonwealth countries. Couples who manage to stay alive and married for 50 years and longer, can arrange to receive a personal blessing from the monarch or other state dignitaries on their 60th, 65th, 70th and subsequent wedding anniversaries. They simply have to apply to Buckingham Palace in the UK, or to the Governor-General's office in the Commonwealth country where they live.
