Detroit Electric Model D, Early Electric Car, Heading To Auction Block

By Cornelius Nunev

Electric automobiles are really early, as they were being offered well before Henry Ford cooked up the Model T in every color as long as it was black. One such old electric, a Detroit Electric Model D, is hitting an auction soon.

Old technology not improving much

To get a consumer to buy brand new stuff, advertising businesses really stress that modern technology is better than old technology. It is one of the things people want you to believe.

People think electric automobiles are a great invention, such as the Nissan Leaf. The truth is that electric vehicles have existed since the early 1900s. In fact, some of the electric automobiles from that period were better than the ones we have now.

In 2010, there was the Detroit Electric Model D created by Detroit Electric. According to the Daily Mail, it had a 100-mile range and will be sold in Arizona at a car public sale soon.

A pretty slow car

About 28 percent of all vehicles in 1900 were electric automobiles because they were quieter than gas-powered vehicles and were much easier to make. There were similar technologies used to make them, but electric motors used batteries. It took no time at all to plug the automobiles into a charger at home. According to CNET, less than one percent of automobiles are electric.

There were a lot of businesses that angry electric vehicles, according to the Truth About Vehicles, but Thomas Edison only recommended Detroit Electric publicly. Between 1907 and 1939, they sold about 20,000 vehicles.

Slow car

The vehicles were pretty simple and did not do a whole lot. They went 25 miles per hour and looked like a horse buggy with headlights. The nice thing was that they could go 100 miles for every charge.

In 8 cities, Detroit Electric had a network of charging stations to ease the burden on people, but cars were certainly a toy for rich people at the time. It cost much more than a Nissan would at a Nissan dealer in Everett now. The Detroit Electric Model D cost about $2,400 at the time, according to the Daily Mail. That translates to about $135,000 now.

It is anticipated that the Model D will get $70,000 to $80,000 in the auction. There was a Detroit Electric business started in 2009 to create a vehicle with vehicle company Proton that is comparable. It sold for about $25,000 at the time in different nations, but it dissolved easily.
