Better Business Practices - Pre Employment Drug Screening F

By Essie Osborn

There are so many accidents at work and productivity is decreasing. Items are disappearing, attitudes have taken a turn for the worse and turnover is high. A company may decide on pre employment drug screening to combat these common workplace issues and problems. It is especially important in businesses where employees operate heavy equipment and machinery.

Applicants will be informed that if they are going to be considered for employment, a drug test will be mandatory. To save time and money, it is important that this be communicated up front before the application is filled out, interviewing takes place and the background check is done. It the company uses online applications, it should be stated clearly that testing will be done on all prospective employees.

Applicants are sent to an off-site clinic where the tests are administered. They are usually at a location that is convenient to the workplace or can be found in multiple locations which will be simple for all individuals to locate and get to.

Individuals will be asked to provide a urine sample when they arrive at the testing venue. The sample is tested in a lab and results can be had for the company quickly, sometimes even within 24 hours. If the test is positive, the individual will not be considered for employment. Often the applicant is informed of the results even before the hiring business.

Although a less common testing method, hair can also be analyzed for the presence of illegal substance in an individual. It stays in a prospective employee hair strands for 90 days or longer.

Kits are available for companies if they wish to conduct their own testing. It is far less expensive and much faster to get results but the final outcome will not always hold up in court. If businesses do choose to do their own tests, positive results should be double checked by a reputable and independent lab.

Some of the illegal substances which may appear in a positive drug test may include cocaine, marijuana, PCP or amphetamines. Signals that drug testing may be compromised also can become apparent and applicants can be sent for re-testing if this occurs.

If the test is negative and the employee is hired, he may be informed that random drug testing is also done within the company. This will prevent former drug users from relapsing and the potential first time user from even starting to use these harmful products. If an employee has a work-related accident, testing is usually automatically conducted at the clinic or emergency room they are taken to.

Adding this precaution to your hiring practices will definitely enhance the quality of employees who are hired and trained. Morale will increase and incidences of accidents, absenteeism, and tardiness will decrease. Screening employees so you hire only the best will help your overall productivity high and company image positive.
