Dead Sea Scroll Digitization Project Providing Access

By Cornelius Nunev

The Dead Sea Scrolls are often considered one of probably the most significant collections of old texts found to date. The Israel Museum was lambasted in the past for not supplying more extensive access to the fragile and damaged files. Now the Israel Museum has combined with Google to offer digital admittance to the files.

Project to scan Dead Sea Scrolls

The Dead Sea Scrolls digitization job has been ongoing for the past few years. A brand new camera had to be developed to photograph the files clearly at 1,200 megapixels in the specialized environment that helps keep the documents from deteriorating more quickly. The scrolls and fragments will be put into an online, searchable database after being photographed and gathered. As several individuals as possible are needed to have access to the scrolls. The goal is to get it out there for everyone. All of the scrolls should be available online by 2016.

Israel Museum works with Google

The Dead Sea Scrolls digitization job is something Google will spend a lot of time with. All scroll photos are located in a database on Google Storage. The Google Apps motor is what runs the website. The pages are all searchable, transcribed and indexed for search results. That is one thing the Google team has been working on. This relationship is comparable to Google's Art Project, Prado Museum and Holocaust photo collection.

Letting remarks be allowed on scrolls

It is very unusual for something such as the Dead Sea Scrolls to allow commentary. This will be allowed with the digitized version. Viewers can look at the sections and make comments. The Dead Sea Scrolls may become more productive with this. Over time, researchers are going to be keeping an eye on what amateur experts find in the scrolls as potential further areas for research. In order to determine a ton of scroll document fragments and pieces, this could be very helpful. Not all pieces and fragments are owned by the Israel Museum. That is why Google has offered to digitize any files that it does not currently have for anybody who wants to make them available.
