Why There Are So Many Problems With Public Education

By Essie Osborn

A common denominator among all successful countries and societies is a quality educational system. Parents have known for a long time that the very best gift they can hope to give their children is a proper education at a reputable institution. It is sad to note that there are so many problems with public education at the moment. Everyone seems to be a critic and the system seems to be failing society as a whole.

Teaching as a career has become less and less attractive to intelligent and motivated young people. Each year colleges have fewer applicants from suitable candidates. This means that schools are not able to employ ambitious and dedicated young teachers any longer. The best of the crop opt for private schools and government schools simply have to deal with a shortage that is fast becoming critical.

Maintenance is another huge challenge. Many teachers and learners are forced to deal with rundown buildings and amenities that do not work properly. It seems as if the budgets simply do not make provision for the proper upkeep of school buildings, sports facilities and the equipment that are vital to any educational facility. This leads to demotivation and even vandalism and trespass.

Government schools simply cannot keep pace of developments the way private schools can. They do not have the funds and the facilities to keep abreast of the latest technology and educational methodology. Teachers have to cope with very little or no teaching aids. In addition, the lack of proper facilities results in very large classes where it is impossible for teachers to pay individual attention to every learner.

Experts agree that one of the biggest challenges facing schools is the serious lack of discipline. It is no longer just a matter of learners not doing their homework. Many schools have experience violence by some of their learners. Some teachers even admit to be scared of some of their students. No school can hope to offer a quality curriculum if the student body is not disciplined and willing to learn.

Many parents are not involved with the schooling their children receive. In some cases they simply cannot be bothered, but many others are simply too busy to become involved with the school. This is especially the case in poorer areas where parents have to hold down more than one job to keep the wolves from the door. If parents are not involved, the school suffers.

A large percentage of school leavers achieved poor results or they simply drop out of the system. These young people have very limited prospects and without a higher education they cannot hope to improve their own lives. This leads to a repetition of the process because they will stay poor, have children and send them to school without becoming involved themselves.

Nobody will argue the fact that high quality schooling is one of the pillars of successful countries and societies. If the system does not function properly urgent steps should be taken to remedy the situation. Everybody should be involved, including industry, the government, parents and students themselves. The greatest gift any child can hope to receive is a solid education.
