Useful Information On OLED Lighting

By April Briggs

Organic Light Emitting Diodes are light emitting panels that are created out of carbon-based organic materials when energy or electricity in this matter is applied. They are presently being used to make beautiful and efficient displays and large lighting panels. This is made possible with the help of light bulbs that have a very thin layer of the material that emits the light. OLED lighting is basically the only proven technology that can make large area lighting panels as opposed to a point or line.

The light is the closest to the earths natural light as it is soft diffused and attractive compared to other light sources. The panels have a colour manipulation characteristic, are transparent and flexible. There are several companies that are already offering the panels; they include Phillips, Konica Minolta, LG Chem. They are currently very expensive and the production is small.

In the next one or two years, the OLED technology is expected to take off with a foreseen decrease in price as well as advanced performance. The technology will experience rapid growth by 2020 according to UBI research which has also predicted that the market will attain 82 million. The UBI research is the most optimistic of all as most researchers do not have faith in the technology.

Due to the dim light produced, panels can be mounted in fixtures seen directly by the eye eliminating the need for reflectors or diffusers to reduce the glare. This approach therefore opens new options for lighting designs. In addition, this technology is related to the LED but has superior benefits that can be somehow compared to the LED.

The overall design of the OLED is of high quality and the light produced can easily be traced to the source. The lifespan of these elements lies between 30,000 and 40,000 hours of continuous use which is less than the 50,000 hours of use of LED. Their effectiveness is also four times better than that of compact fluorescent bulbs.

Most consumers are not aware of this technology creating the need for production companies to educate them. This will definitely be a challenging area for them that they will have to deal with. When people see the OLED products for the first time, they stop in their tracks as a result of their beauty. Most consumers look for lighting sources that are energy efficient which is a key benefit in the market.

Today, OLED is a quite under the efficacy requirements of lumens per watt but improvements are underway to match the standards. The biggest motivation for this technology will come with a drop in their cost as the consumers will have the opportunity to take part in the commodity product market. Moreover, the technology is opening new doors for creatives, designers and architects.

OLED technology can be a source of entertainment to visitors at home as you can play around with the lights to make patterns. The technology is looking forward to coming up with a lighting system that goes hand in hand with peoples moods. This will enable a person to be depicted as a living form of light which is really impressive when you think about how useful this technology will be.
