Professional Development For Teachers Who Care

By Francis Riggs

All instructors must do their very best to keep up with educational changes and trends. Because of this, school districts offer professional development for teachers. This assists them in making the biggest and best impact on their students.

These are normally taught after school hours, on weekends, and all the way through summer. The more important ones that are based on core subject are sometimes even offered on regular school days.

During the course of these classes, instructors are required to work on hand-on activities, group instruction, and class lectures. This is so important as the manner in which these seminars are held is the same way in which instructors teach their students. Those who participate learn both the content and innovative methods of presenting materials to students.

For example, an English-language arts teacher could attend courses in interpreting poetry, writing poetry, increasing vocabulary skills, or shared reading. She would go through exactly the same routine as a student would so she could understand the process, be able to empathize with the student, and be able to teach the subject more effectively from a teacher's perspective. She would receive instruction on these critical areas and she would also be actively doing some of the very same activities her students would. She would be immersed in the same type of instruction that she herself would provide for her young students.

Many times these courses are held so instructors can learn how to use new software or technology. It may be new ways of taking attendance or recording grades, innovative resources for subjects, educational websites that the class can utilize, aligning lesson plans with testing, evaluation or assessment tools, or how to operate new equipment. These are all examples of topics and training that instructors can learn and take back to their respective schools.

Getting families involved may also be the focus of a seminar. The more a parent is involved with their child's education, the more well adjusted and confident he will be in his studies in his early years and beyond. Teaching instructors how to reach out to parents and get their attention in helping with their child's educational requirements will go far in creating a wonderful learning environment for any student. This training is essential for new teachers and those who work in very low income areas.

Some of these sessions may deal with issues such as improving the classroom and school environment or handling serious behavior issues. A person who is new to the education field or taking on an extremely difficult group of students may benefit greatly from this. Some of the subjects covered and taught could include discipline, behavior management, arranging an effective classroom, collaboration, and co-teaching.

Education of instructors is vital to the growth and learning of all children. Also individual educators will have much more confidence in their skills and be more aware of the effect they have on their students. The end result will be a higher standard of learning with instructors who have the proper tools to bring this about in their classrooms every year.
