Various Opinions About And Realities Of Employees Who Have Had Cleaning Training

There seem to be some common traits of and opinions about individuals who are custodial workers. Being concerned or curious about such details would not be unreasonable, for any person who is considering cleaning training as a path to future employment. It may be a good idea for such an individual to examine various perceptions and personality traits related to those who work in the custodial and janitorial industry.

According to an article in the New York Times, when Newt Gingrich made comments in 2011 regarding child labor laws, he seemed to evoke general outrage among the American public. His suggestion that child labor laws could and should be modified, so that poor children could earn money and learn about working by performing janitor jobs in schools, was seen as an elitist and unenlightened statement. However, an individual who has done such work for money might think differently about that statement.

At one time, labor was a large part of the economic and social foundation of the modern workforce. Manual labor jobs enabled millions of individuals to feed their children. As technology flourished, and companies began to outsource labor employment, the social structure also began to change. Opinions about cleaners and custodians may have begun to change then, as well.

A janitor might clear away a wide range of public messes, but not all people are aware of this fact. The janitor who cleans an office might be perceived as inferior on a social scale, to some of the people who work in that office. Some individuals might simply be curious about the tasks associated with cleaners jobs, especially if they have never known people who have worked at cleaning jobs.

An airline pilot might not be aware of the job requirements of the janitorial staff at the airport. However, a district attorney might have done custodial work to pay for law school. A pediatrician could have had a parent who cleaned the lobby of a local hospital.

Just as the perceptions of and details related to such jobs can vary, the people who perform them also vary. There may not be one particular profile of a custodial worker or cleaner, but such individuals may possess certain common traits. According to research done at Clemson University, in South Carolina, the personality profile of a janitorial worker could be consistent with that of an individual who does not require much interpersonal contact, in order to thrive.

Many people who work in such jobs are satisfied with working with few or no coworkers. This could mean that a person who works as a custodian is apt to have an independent nature. The same type of person who does freelance work, or who works in a science lab, might well be found vacuuming the floors of an office, after the other workers there have gone home for the day.

Realities and perceptions may be different for various people. Based on the state that the economy is in, more job applicants than ever will accept any work they are offered. Numerous employers are now requiring janitors to provide resumes with their applications for employment. This could mean that a person with some experience or cleaner training might be considered for a position before other applicants are. It may also mean that these types of jobs are taken more seriously now than they have been in the past.
